Kermit and Miss Piggy are household names from the Muppet world. Kermit the frog; a leader and a green ukelele player. Miss Piggy; the definition of diva and star quality. A power couple if there ever was one. But that’s just it, this iconic couple is a ‘was’. Kermit and Miss Piggy had an on-again, off-again relationship since the show first aired in 1976. Kermit had some internal issues dating a pig and felt Miss Piggy was too outwardly affectionate. In 1979 Miss Piggy officially announced their engagement on the Today Show. Kermit was not very pleased with her public announcement and the two didn’t get married for a while.
In fact, they waited until 1984 to hold their first wedding. Kermit insists that the two were only acting out a wedding scene. Miss Piggy on the other hand continues to claim that they were married for real with a minister as proof. In 1990 the couple went on the Today Show once again, only this time to announce their separation. In 1993 Miss Piggy and Kermit were being interviewed by Larry King, and when asked about the marriage, Kermit once again denied any actual nuptials occurred. Miss Piggy responded saying they do live together in a domestic partnership, but only a year later on “Good Morning Texas”, Kermit denied the existence of any romantic relationship between the two.
In 1996 there were even more mixed signals with Kermit sticking to his story regarding the marriage, claiming he has zero feelings for Miss Piggy, while Miss Piggy said in interviews that same year that they were in fact married. In 2005 when asked, the couple said they were “married in their hearts”, in regard to their romantic relationship. In 2011, Miss Piggy and Kermit split up in “The Muppets” with Miss Piggy living in France pursuing her dream of being a fashion editor for Vogue Paris, and Kermit living in LA. At the end of the movie the two are brought back together in an emotional scene where Kermit gets as close as he ever gets to telling Miss Piggy that he loves her.
In a 2014 interview with Queen Latifah, Kermit confirmed that the pair had been in a committed relationship for “some time” and they seemed to be planning a real wedding. And yet, in 2015 Miss Piggy posted on Twitter with a statement concerning her and Kermit’s “relationship termination”. Years later the pair remained civil in public and continued to work together, but their relationship remained only professional in nature. Briefly, Kermit was making headlines for his relationship with another pig named Denise, but they broke up after a short period. When asked about their relationship status in 2021, Miss Piggy said they were not in a romantic relationship anymore but remain good friends and colleagues. Miss Piggy has had her fair share of whirlwind romances since she and Kermit officially split, but she is currently single.
The nature of Kermit and Miss Piggy’s relationship history is extremely complicated as you’ve read. I decided to hold an experiment to see what people think their current status is. I went around the classroom and asked the same question, “What is the relationship between Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog?” Here are the responses;
Nye: “I’m not quite sure.”
Zoe: “They f**ing.”
Mr. Glover: “Pretty flirtatious. It’s scandalous.”
Who knows what the future holds for the two Muppets? They’ve split before but this time it seems to be for good. Only Kermit and Miss Piggy know what’s going on behind closed doors. Did Kermit and Miss Piggy actually get married? Is Kermit ashamed of their love affair? Will they go back to one another once again? Only time will tell.
