When you think of Safeway, do you think of that long line of West Seattle students trailing out on the sidewalk? The $1 donuts? The security guards cracking down on thieves? You probably think of all that, but not of the Delhi breakfast burritos tucked away in the far corner. My friends and I used to go there often when the lunches were long. And you might be thinking, a breakfast burrito from Safeway? How good could it actually be? Well, very, very good indeed.
You just walk right up the sandwich area of the Delhi, where the workers are as busy as bees buzzing around making burritos and sandwiches. You order a breakfast burrito and can pick whatever you want of the options they have. Every burrito has a base of JoJo’s potatoes, eggs, and either a meat of sausage, bacon, or both. You can also get no meat if you’re into that sort of thing. You can add pretty much anything you want. My personal favorite is, potatoes, eggs, sausage, bacon, pepperjack cheese, diced peppers, ranch, and spicy chipotle sauce. One bite turns a bad day into a good day, and a good day into a great day. Then the workers heat it up. This is the regular for me and my friends. When you bite into it, you get an explosion of vibrant flavor, soft crunchy texture, and a spicy kick. But people get whatever they want, my brother gets a similar burrito often, one of my friends Kingston used to get lettuce in his burrito just to feel healthy, I know another guy who would load up his burrito like a spice bomb. He’d stuff jalapenos, chipotle sauce, then get spicy chicken from the Delhi and put it in there. It was so hot it makes your head sweat and your nose run. So, if you have a complaint about the burritos taste, just get something else in there.
Next time you stop by Safeway and find your stomach rumbling, try getting a blissful breakfast burrito beloved by me and many from West Seattle High School. Load it up with flavor and let it take you away.
