In the last couple of weeks, there has been talk of a possible TikTok ban in the United States due to the fact that it is owned by the Chinese company, ByteDance, causing people to speculate it is stealing data to spy on American citizens. Congress has already agreed to pass the bill, but it still must go through the Supreme Court to become an official law. Lots of people argued that it is taking away freedom of speech, and they want it to stay. One interviewee, Lily Egan, said “I don’t want TikTok to go away because my whole life is on there.” However, all hope is not lost, as TikTok could be saved if a different company buys it from ByteDance. Some places that might buy it are Project Liberty, who have already offered 20 billion dollars, Microsoft, Doug McMillan (Walmart), and Elon Musk. If no one ends up buying TikTok, it will go away, affecting millions of lives across the United States. Thousands of influencers will need to find actual jobs, a lot of small businesses will have to shut down because there will be no more TikTok shop, and so many viewers will have to change their routines and find something else to do in the time that they would be watching TikTok. One interviewee, Kate Russell, said “I would be more productive and procrastinate less,” when she was asked about how the ban would affect her daily life. One Senator, Senator Ed Markey, has proposed a 270-day delay for the ban of TikTok, and is trying to pass the Extend the TikTok Deadline Act. He claims that the ban would upend “one-of-a-kind informational and cultural ecosystem.” As of now, the deadline for the TikTok ban is still January 19th and quickly approaching.
