I’d like to preface this by saying I honestly don’t know what I’m doing. Really — not in a staged humble way, but in a “why did I agree to this?” way. When the idea to write a weekly article for the school paper came up, instead of saying something logical like, “I can barely write my English essays on time,” I said, “Sure! That sounds fun!”
So, here’s the first edition of “Wednesdays with Nevaeh”: my very own weekly corner of chaos. It’ll probably be part diary, part therapy session—and definitely the kind of thing that makes you wonder, “What did I just read?”
I’m calling it “Wednesdays with Nevaeh” because 1) it sounds better than “Midweek Meltdown”, and 2) I’ll be writing something like this every Wednesday — assuming I don’t forget what day it is, which, let’s be honest, is a very real possibility.
So, here’s what to expect: this column will consist of weekly reflections compiling my bad decisions, thoughts about school, the places I go, and the miscellaneous daily disasters I encounter. Picture our brains telepathically connecting through “Wednesdays with Nevaeh”, except my thoughts are a lot clearer on the page.
High school is weird, and this will be my space to talk about it.
High school is the place where you’re expected to know the plan for your entire future meanwhile being required to ask to use the bathroom. High school is the place where one minute you might be doing algebra, and the next you’re having a deep conversation about life in the hallway with someone you barely know. Yet, such encounters are what makes our short time here interesting — all those snapshots of high school life that make no sense in the moment somehow define the week.
In this little corner of Nevaeh Weekly, I’ll talk about it all. The drama of group projects, the mystery of why teachers assign three tests and a project on the same day, and the never-ending question: why is the cafeteria pizza shaped like that? I’ll also share random stories — like that time I got stuck holding someone’s laptop because I thought it was mine, or when I tried to be productive during advisory to no avail and ended up reorganizing my backpack for no reason.
Yet, it’s not just going to be jokes and chaos. Sometimes I’ll get real — talking about what it’s like to deal with stress, friendships, figuring out who you are, and all that other deep stuff that hits in the middle of the night when you’re staring at the ceiling, wondering if you ever turned in your homework. Although we all joke about “surviving high school,” sometimes it truly feels like fight or flight mode is activated, and it’s nice to know other people experience that too.
Truthfully, “Wednesdays with Nevaeh” is going to be far from perfect, so if you came here expecting professional journalism, you’re in the wrong place. However, if you’re here for stories that sound like a friend ranting in the hallway between classes — welcome!
My plan is simple: write every Wednesday, see what happens, and hope someone out there laughs or at least says, “Same.” I’ll be talking about everything from awkward hallway encounters to the art of pretending you understand what’s happening in math class. (Spoiler: I don’t.)
High school can be stressful, dramatic, and straight-up confusing — but it’s also hilarious, unpredictable, and kind of amazing once you stop taking it too seriously. That’s what I want this column to be about. The weird, the funny, and the totally relatable moments that make up the week.
So, here’s to the start of something new — or at least something interesting. “Wednesdays with Nevaeh” might not change the world, but maybe it’ll make your Wednesday a little less boring.
See you next week (assuming I stick to this)!
