Welcome back to another WWN. Wildcats have just come back from a weeklong break, and it’s already evident that people can’t wait until the next one. However short it may have felt for some people, it’s impossible not to notice how some students return a completely different person.
Some announce their transformations, meanwhile others don’t need to say anything; their transformation is evident. After this recent break, I found myself in the latter category—not in terms of physical change, but in mindset. This leads me to ponder a profound question: how much can a person truly develop in a short amount of time?
During the summer, some individuals experience growth spurts, returning to school towering over their peers, their new height generating playful nicknames and friendly rivalries. Those summer months often represent a time of exploration and experimentation, where we try new hobbies, enter new social circles, or even embark on unusual adventures. Others may discover new friendships that feel as light as a warm breeze and as thrilling as a rollercoaster ride. These relationships, often blossoming from shared experiences or mutual interests, can redefine who we think we are.
However, the more pressing question remains: how can we accurately measure mental change? While some may say a simple checklist or a diary could suffice, I believe the measurement is much more nuanced. Sometimes, it’s the way we process an uncomfortable situation, our reactions to obstacles that challenge our comfort zones, or even the laughter we share over silly moments. Once we embrace the idea that change often comes in small, incremental steps, we can begin to notice the shifts in our thoughts and feelings more clearly.
Individuals grow older, and with that age comes a wisdom that feels akin to maturing wine—starting off a bit harsh, and over time, developing richness and depth. This aging process can also lead to drifting away from friends—the ones we once considered inseparable. As the sands of time shift, we might find ourselves in different places, both literally and metaphorically. It can be a bittersweet revelation when you realize that the friend with whom you once shared every secret now leads a life that feels worlds apart from yours.
So, what is the most effective way to demonstrate that change has occurred? Perhaps it’s the stories we share, filled with laughter, lessons, and even heartaches. Maybe it’s found in the small victories we celebrate: the late-night brainstorming sessions or the moments of courage that inspired a daring leap into the unknown. Or, could it be rooted in how we treat ourselves and those around us? In a world that often moves too fast, we need to slow down and repurpose our energy to ensure we’re continually growing in ways that matter.
As winter fades and spring emerges, the world is filled with renewal and growth. Each time the seasons shift, so do we. The cool breeze feels different, carrying hints of nostalgia and new beginnings, urging us to reflect on our experiences and how they shape us. When we embrace change, rather than shy away from it, we find ourselves at the helm of our own narrative, crafting the story of who we are and who we wish to become.
Through this lens, every challenge transforms into an opportunity, every setback is a steppingstone. Change is the adventure that takes us on roads less traveled, where we learn resilience and creativity. Each laugh, tear, and lesson learned shapes us, shedding our old skins and helping us emerge anew.
Change is not just a quantitative measure that can be weighed on a scale. Instead, it is the fusion of our experiences, relationships, and lessons learned. We may not grow physically every break, but mentally, we become different versions of ourselves more courageous, more empathetic, and undoubtedly, more interesting. As we explore the world and the relationships around us when we’re off school, we can embrace the exhilarating prospect of transformation, celebrating every twist and turn, The profound question is, indeed, not how much we change, but how beautifully we learn to adapt and flourish in a world that never stops evolving.
